Lena Headey Sees a Future Without Animal Circuses

10th September 2008

Lena Headey wants you to know that animals in circuses are beaten, chained, whipped and forced to perform against their will. That's why the star of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the award-winning 300 is speaking out against archaic circuses in a new ad for PETA.

In the ad, Headey lets viewers in on what happens behind-the-scenes under the big top.

"Circus trainers often force elephants, bears, tigers and other animals to perform tricks by beating and whipping them, shocking them with electric prods and jabbing holes in their skin with sharp metal hooks",

she says.

Animals in circuses are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. In their natural habitats, the same animals you see in chains, wearing costumes, riding bikes, and being beaten with whips and bullhooks in the circus would be free to walk, run and roam as they please; eat and drink whenever they feel like it; choose lifetime companions and raise their families. The circus provides animals with nothing but humiliation, pain and misery.

In an interview with PETA US, Headey explained that a documentary motivated her to try to stop the use of animals in circuses:

"I decided to speak out because I'd seen a documentary on a French circus, and people had campaigned to free these lions that were in captivity since they were young. And they managed to do it, and they flew them to Africa, and it was really beautiful. But the fact is, it's still going on."

In this 30-second public service announcement for PETA, Lena Headey addresses the cruelty behind the scenes in circuses that use animals.

Jonas Brothers: no hard feelings towards Russell Brand

10th September 2008

The Jonas Brothers have said they’re not annoyed by Russell Brand’s comments about their chastity pledges at the MTV VMAs on Sunday.

Russell, who was hosting the ceremony, joked that the trio should be taking advantage of their fame to get lucky with the ladies and that he had stolen one of their virginities before holding aloft a silver ring, similar to the symbolic rings the brothers wear.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, the brothers avoided specifically mentioning the topic but Nick Jonas said: “For us it’s cool to see that he recognizes we are gentleman.”

He added: “I think he did a good job. We saw him on [The Late Show With] Conan O’Brien and thought he was hilarious.”

Older brother Kevin Jonas though thought that Russell’s comments and his political monologue in particular didn’t cover enough:

“I think he focused on certain things and didn’t move off of them. People’s attention spans in America need more than that.”
