"I sit there and I look back and I'm like, 'I'm a smart person. What the hell was I thinking?"' Spears said in an interview to air on MTV on November 30, two days before the release of her new album.

"I've been through a lot in the past two or three years, and there's a lot that people don't know."

The 90-minute special, Britney: For The Record, was executive-produced by Spears' manager Larry Rudolph. It features behind-the-scenes footage of the singer and her talking about her life over the past two years.

She's got a lot to talk about: In that time span, she has got divorced, been through a custody battle, gone to rehab, had very public meltdowns and had one memorably bad performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Now on the comeback trail, Spears is releasing her sixth album, Circus, in the US on December 2, her 27th birthday.

Spears says she's hoping this TV special will "set the record straight" about her life.

"Something happens overnight (on the third night). I go to bed and I can open my eyes, and then when I wake up the next day I can't. Nobody knows why."

Ms Adler's problems started at school after a nasal infection.

She said: "I just never got better.

"I woke one Sunday and my eyes were swollen. It was the day before an English exam.

"My eyes started closing intermittently, really randomly, but within a few weeks they were closing for three days."

Experts cannot explain the condition.

Royal Eye and Ear Hospital associate professor Justin O'Day said: "Natalie's a mystery. She's a one-off and we don't have a diagnosis.

"It's unusual to see somebody with this degree of spasming and eyelid closure, especially at this age."

The doctor said a condition called blepharospasm – random muscle spasms forcing the eyes to shut – could offer some explanation.

On days where Ms Adler's eyes are closed, she says she can see from a small slit in her left eye.

And on days when her eyes are open – marked in her diary – Ms Adler tries to do as much as possible.

She said: "On my 18th birthday, my eyes were closed, but on my 21st they were open, so I had a party."

The 35-year-old magician has spent three days hoisted by his heels over the Wollmann Rink in New York's Central Park.

But his stunt, which was billed as an attempt to hang upside down for 60 hours, disappointed many curious onlookers who found him standing upright on a cherry picker, drinking water and relieving himself during frequent breaks.
